Johan as a former management consultant, specialised in leading the go-to-market process of new business models or technologies.
Qualified as a Mechanical Engineer with an MBA, he has more than 20 years of in-depth experience spanning small-medium enterprises to large corporates in different industries. He has travelled extensively, and has had the privilege to work and study in Sub-Saharan Africa, the UK and the USA.
As a student, Johan built up a small business for racquet restringing services and distributing sports gear to various sport clubs and retail stores, initially to fund his studies and later to save for investing in property.
Starting out as an engineer responsible for steel manufacturing, fleet maintenance operations and logistics, Johan also spent two years working in wealth management in London, specifically to leverage the opportunity to travel internationally and gain first-hand insight into the global financial markets.
He then completed a full-time MBA degree in the United States, after which he co-founded an information technology business to leverage South African technology and skills in the UK and Europe.
Returning to South Africa after 7 years abroad, Johan became involved in product development, business development, strategy, and leading the go-to-market of unique projects or new technologies in the fixed and mobile telecoms industries, as well as digital transformation in the financial services industry. He was also responsible for overseeing the launch of a new long distance fibre network, as well as leading the design and implementation of cellular coverage for the Gautrain rail environment. The project was a first in Africa.
As an entrepreneur, Johan is partly involved in a number of investments that he has made over the years, including property investments, and investments in the development of intellectual property in the telecoms, rail, and renewable energy sectors. He is also involved in wood manufacturing.
Johan has a hands-on approach, with a deep understanding of the drivers of business value. He also enjoys working on business strategy, business cases, business development or technology, and excels in identifying synergies for strategic business or partnership development, focused on opening up new business opportunities.
He believes that South Africa has a very strong entrepreneurial capability, and is focused on assisting business owners and entrepreneurs to achieve their goals through the right opportunities.
